The Bust Report….
Nothing can stop your chance of a promising season quicker than having a couple early round busts on your team. As much as your league mates may like to talk up their surprise sleepers from the year before, they rarely like to bring up when they missed big on a player drafted early. Here is a list of potential guys that we recommend moving down your draft board.
Donovan McNabb, Washington—
Its extremely rare to see a team trade a player to another team in their own division, much less one with the talent and resume of Donovan McNabb. Few quarterbacks have been as consistent over the past 10 seasons as McNabb but the Eagles didn’t seem to worry about having him in the same division. Add to that he is moving to a team in the Redskins that have featured more of a balanced attack and do not have anywhere near the offensive weapons he had as an Eagle and expectations should be down this season for McNabb. This is not to say that he won’t have a few game here and there where you can count on him for a big game, but I think he would be much better as your number 2 QB and he will not be reliable on a weekly basis to start week in and week out as he has in the past.
Marques Colston, New Orleans—
Super Bowl Champs…check. Number one receiver in a pass happy offense…check. So what is the problem with Colston? Having too much talent in the Big Easy is the exact reason I would stay away from Colston. The Saints just use way too many weapons on offense to recommend grabbing him early. Instead wait about 5 rounds later and grab Robert Meachem who had the same number to touchdowns as Colston last season with 9. While I expect Colston to have a decent season this year, there is so much more value in waiting and grabbing Meachem later and spending the early round pick on a player with much more upside.
Felix Jones, Dallas Cowboys—
Felix Jones is like that hot girl in college who makes all the guys drool, but once you get your chance to spend some time with her you realize there really isn’t much there besides a pretty face. For the past couple season, Felix Jones has been a pre-draft sleeper that owners fall in love with, then they draft him too early and realizes their mistake after it’s too late. If you look at his career so far he misses far too many games with injuries, he doesn’t score touchdowns and he didn’t even have a single 100 yard game rushing in the regular season last year. Regardless of who gets named the starter in Dallas this year, Marion Barber will still be the goal line back, as history has proven, so the upside just isn’t there with Jones. I would consider Barber to be the better selection if deciding between the two of them, but lets also not forget Dallas leans heavily on the passing game too. There are just too many negatives with Jones, until he proves he is worth such an early round selection stay away.
