- Draft Day – Hopefully you had a successful draft. Its much easier to win your league if you start out with a group of players capable of producing week in and week out. At this point in the season you should know how successful your draft day was and where your teams weaknesses are.
- Know Your Team – Follow your players as closely as possible. At the very least, check their stats each week. Look for the obvious… yards and touchdowns, but don’t forget to pay attention to carries and targets as well. This will give you a good indication of a players opportunities within their NFL offense.
- Stalk Your Team – Even better than following stats is to actually watch your players as much as possible. Numbers only tell so much of the story so watch the NFL recap shows, check out the highlights on the tube and the internet.
- Stalk Your Enemy – Its also important to follow the players on the teams of your competition. Knowing where other owner are strong or weak allow you a chance to pull off trades and hopefully buy cheap on their players or sell high on your guys to fill needs.
- Put The Moves On – Realize the importance of making moves in your league, whether it be free agent pickups or wheelin’ and dealin’ you want to continue to strengthen your team as the season progresses. Get in early on waiver wire guys you want, if you wait on somebody he will get snatched up by another owner leaving you empty handed and watching said player blowup.
- You Can Never Have Too Much Talent – Grab guys that are available or on the trading block cheap even if you don’t necessarily need them. Keeping potential point producers off of the competitions team can be as important as getting a guy for your own team needs. Never think your team is good or deep enough, injuries, suspensions and sexting can pop up at anytime and you could lose a player when you least expect it.
- Luck Of The Draw – Its one of the most annoying parts of fantasy football, but its also a major factor in how a season plays out. Good luck (sometimes) and bad luck (way to often) will occur during the season so its best to realize that sometimes its completely out of your control. If you lose a couple early round draft picks to season ending injuries, its going to be tough to win the league, accept it and try to work around it, but some years its just not meant to be.
- Always Play Your Studs – This is a lesson that every fantasy owner will learn at some point while playing this game. You may want to get cute and over analyze why your bench guy is worthy of a start over your stud running back for a week based on projections or matchups. This strategy bites owners in the ass more often than not. Your stud players should be in your lineup every single week…its easier to accept losing with them in your lineup than on your bench.
- Get Your Needs Filled - As the final weeks of the season come to an end and you find yourself in playoff position, continue to find ways to make your team as strong as possible for the playoff run. Pay attention to NFL teams schedules during the fantasy playoffs and look for matchups to use to your advantage. Beg, borrow or steal all the players you need to make your final push past the regular season and unleash the best possible squad you can for your run to a league championship.
- Follow FantasyJoes – Shameless plug…okay I admit….but regardless of where you get your information, stay up on the NFL and fantasy football as much as possible for the whole season. Read fantasy articles, such as this one and listen to fantasy podcasts, such as the FantasyJoes podcast. Watch the pre-game shows, search the internet for fantasy news instead of porn (at least for a little while), you get the idea. A knowledgeable owner has the advantage, so stay on top of what is happening in your league and the NFL.
